Boyana Waterfall is one of the best-known waterfalls on Vitosha mountain, in Vitosha Nature Park above the Boyana quarter of Sofia, Bulgaria. It is reached by a forest trail from the trailhead on ul. Boyansko Ezero, and the path climbs through beech and spruce woodland beside a stream before reaching the falls. The frame offered is a narrow, tall drop of water over dark rock in a shaded gorge, surrounded by moss, ferns and trees. Because the gorge is deeply shaded, overcast days and early mornings are best, as they keep contrast low and allow long exposures of 1 to 4 seconds that turn the water silky. A tripod, an ND filter and a polarising filter help control reflections on wet rock and leaves. Late spring, after snowmelt, brings the highest flow and the fullest greenery; in winter the falls can partially freeze, which produces ice formations and a very different image, although the trail may be slippery and needs careful footing. Summer water levels fall, so the falls can look thin. The trail is popular with families and walkers on weekends, so the viewpoint at the base can be crowded and tripod space is limited; weekday mornings are much quieter. Sturdy waterproof shoes help on wet rocks near the base. Tripods are allowed in the nature park, though they should not obstruct the trail. Entry to the nature park is free at this trailhead, but any rules posted by the park authority apply. Drones are not suitable in the protected park, where flights are restricted. A 24-70mm lens frames the falls with the surrounding rock, and a small towel helps keep the lens dry from spray. There are no facilities at the falls, so water should be carried, and toilets are found back in the village area.
