Thorntree River Lodge

Thorntree River Lodge sits on the western bank of the Luangwa River inside South Luangwa National Park, one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife reserves. Operated by African Bush Camps, the lodge is positioned near the confluence of seasonal tributaries where the river curves, giving each tent direct sightlines across the water and over the floodplain opposite — a natural corridor for elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and the park's famed leopard population. The design uses large canvas tents on raised timber platforms beneath thatched overhangs, set into riparian woodland rather than cleared ground. Eight individual tents and two family units are arranged along the riverbank at intervals that preserve privacy between them. Each tent has its own private plunge pool on a shaded deck cantilevered over the river, a canvas-and-timber lounge seating area, and an indoor bathroom featuring a stone soaking tub and separate rain shower. The furnishings are minimal but carefully chosen — hand-stitched textiles, locally carved wooden side tables, and reading lamps sized for the scale of the space. Dining takes place in the main camp under a thatched open-sided pavilion where tables are dressed for a three-course dinner that changes daily and sources fresh produce from Mfuwe-area suppliers. Bush breakfasts are a regular feature, carried out on game drives to scenic spots. Game drives depart twice daily with qualified African Bush Camps guides using open-sided 4x4 vehicles with elevated seats. Walking safaris with professional licensed guides, night drives permitted by the park authority, and photography hides staffed by experienced naturalists round out the activity programme. South Luangwa is particularly known for leopard sightings, the seasonal elephant concentrations at water sources during June–October, and the walking safari tradition introduced here by Norman Carr in the 1950s. A full-time spa therapist provides treatments in-tent or on the private deck. The lodge closes during the deep wet season, typically January through March when bush roads are impassable.
