Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge

Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge occupies an elevated hillside position within South Luangwa National Park, offering panoramic views over the Luangwa Valley from a high vantage point that is relatively uncommon in a park dominated by flat floodplains and meandering channels. The lodge was originally constructed as a private retreat for Zambia's founding President Kenneth Kaunda and has since been developed by Sanctuary Retreats into a full-service premium safari operation; the name refers both to the Chichele concession area of South Luangwa in which it sits and to the building's presidential heritage. The architecture is contemporary African with deliberate scale — wide stone terraces, an infinity pool that appears to spill over the hillside into the valley below, and large-windowed public rooms designed to frame the landscape from inside as well as outside. Eight luxury chalets and two interconnecting family suites are positioned around the main lodge building on the hillside. Each chalet has a private plunge pool, air conditioning, outdoor shower, lounge seating on a private deck facing the valley, and a bedroom large enough for king-sized beds with mosquito canopies. The family suites sleep up to four and are the only interconnecting units in the property. Dining at Chichele is formal by bush-lodge standards — white-linen service in the main dining room for dinner with a rotating menu drawing on South African and Zambian culinary influences, and bush breakfasts served at viewpoints during morning game drives. A wine cellar holds South African and European labels maintained at cellar temperature. The viewing deck and bar are the social centre of evenings, with guides presenting wildlife summaries and star identification for guests. Safari activities include twice-daily game drives with Sanctuary's resident field guides, guided walking safaris with a licensed professional guide, and night drives permitted within the park. The Chichele concession has historically produced strong leopard sightings, and the elevated position provides excellent scanning for raptors. A bird hide is particularly productive during the green season when migrant species arrive. A spa, gym, and reference library complete the facilities. Rates are fully all-inclusive.
