Flatdogs Camp

Flatdogs Camp takes its name from local Zambian slang for crocodile and has been one of South Luangwa's most consistently praised independent camps for over two decades. It occupies a private stretch of land alongside the Luangwa River in the Mfuwe area, just outside the national park boundary in the Nsefu Sector, with the main park gate a short drive from the camp entrance. The unfenced setting means wildlife moves freely through the property — elephants walk among the accommodation at night, hippos surface along the riverbank, and the occasional leopard has been spotted moving through in the early hours. The river is the constant backdrop and the primary reason guests return.

The camp offers a deliberate range of accommodation types to suit different party configurations and budgets. Stilted chalets with direct river or bush views represent the premium tier; ground-level chalets are more modestly priced; and a self-catering safari house sleeping up to ten guests suits families and groups. All rooms are en-suite with ceiling fans and mosquito netting. The camp runs on solar and generator power, and all bathrooms have hot water. The pool — generously sized by South Luangwa standards — faces the Luangwa and regularly has hippo activity visible directly below.

The thatched restaurant and bar is the social hub of camp, serving generous three-course dinners and reliable breakfasts well-regarded among South Luangwa visitors. Game drives operate morning and afternoon in open vehicles with experienced local guides. Walking safaris with an armed ranger are a camp speciality, and Flatdogs is notable for offering genuinely affordable half-day walking options that many fully inclusive camps do not provide separately. An on-site travel desk assists guests moving on to Kafue, the Lower Zambezi, or Livingstone.
