Unplugged Hostel Colonia

Unplugged Hostel occupies a restored colonial structure on Calle de España in Colonia del Sacramento's historic quarter, the UNESCO World Heritage precinct that draws day-trippers from Buenos Aires and longer-stay travellers exploring Uruguay's compact southwest. The building dates to the Portuguese colonial period and retains its thick stone walls, arched doorways, and terracotta tile floors, providing natural insulation that keeps the interior cool in summer. The hostel sits roughly 150 metres from the Portón de Campo, the landmark city gate, and under 400 metres from the lighthouse that marks the edge of the Barrio Histórico.

Accommodation is offered in mixed and female-only dormitories sleeping four to eight guests, along with several private double rooms, each simply furnished with firm mattresses, reading lights, and locker storage. A shared communal kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering, with pots, pans, and utensil sets available. The courtyard serves as a social hub where guests gather over morning coffee or afternoon maté.

Bicycle rental is available at the hostel desk, and the entire UNESCO precinct can be explored on two wheels in under an hour; most historic sights fall within a compact coastal walking circuit. Free Wi-Fi reaches both dormitories and the courtyard. Breakfast items are available to purchase each morning, though many guests prefer to shop at the small market two blocks away.

Staff are knowledgeable about day-excursion timing for the Buenos Aires ferry, which departs from the pier roughly one kilometre from the hostel, and can advise on bus connections to Montevideo.
