Posada Plaza Mayor operates from a beautifully restored colonial building on Calle del Comercio in the Barrio Histórico of Colonia del Sacramento, the UNESCO World Heritage quarter representing one of the most intact examples of Portuguese-era urban planning in South America. The posada sits approximately 50 metres from Plaza Mayor, the historic square that gives the property its name, and less than 150 metres from the colonial-period lighthouse overlooking the Río de la Plata. The surrounding streets are cobblestoned and closed to through traffic, making the immediate environment exceptionally quiet for an accommodation in a popular day-trip destination.
Ten rooms are distributed across the two floors of the colonial building, each individually decorated with antique furnishings, hand-embroidered linen, iron bed frames, and locally made ceramics. The rooms vary in size; some face the courtyard garden, others the stone-paved street. A small sitting library on the ground floor holds a curated selection of books on Uruguayan history, colonial architecture, and South American travel.
Breakfast is prepared fresh each morning by the owners and served in the courtyard garden when weather permits, or in the dining room on cooler days. The spread typically includes fresh bread from the bakery on the next block, seasonal fruit, homemade jam, yogurt, freshly squeezed juice, and eggs cooked to order. Bicycle hire at the front desk provides the easiest way to extend exploration beyond the Barrio Histórico toward the town's newer waterfront parks and beaches.
The posada does not have a pool, spa, or conference facilities. Its appeal is entirely the atmosphere, location, and personal service of a small owner-operated property in one of the Río de la Plata region's most historically significant urban settings.
