Reptile Gardens

Reptile Gardens, located 8 miles south of Rapid City on US-16 in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is a family-owned zoological attraction that has operated since 1937 and holds a Guinness World Record for the world's largest collection of reptile species. The collection spans over 225 species and includes the park's signature exhibit — a large indoor Sky Dome arena covering tropical and temperate reptile habitats beneath a glass dome. Prairie and desert habitats house rattlesnakes, Gila monsters, and native South Dakota reptile species. The broader collection includes Burmese pythons, Komodo dragons, Nile crocodiles, and rare aldabra tortoises among hundreds of other specimens. Several daily scheduled programs run throughout the operating day, including a free-flight bird show in an outdoor arena, a rattlesnake presentation, alligator feeding, and hands-on snake encounters with non-venomous species. Prairie dog towns, a large indoor tropical garden dome, and big cat enclosures supplement the reptile focus. The Sky Dome's climate-controlled interior provides reliable programming regardless of weather and offers relief during hot summer afternoons on the outdoor prairie sections. All scheduled shows and indoor exhibits are included in the single admission price with no additional charges. Reptile Gardens operates seasonally from May through October and is closed in winter months; visitors should confirm current operating status before visiting in May or October shoulder months.
