Bear Country USA

Bear Country USA is a drive-through wildlife park located 13 miles south of Rapid City on US-16 in the Black Hills of South Dakota, specializing in North American wildlife with a particular focus on black and grizzly bears, wolves, mountain lions, mountain goats, elk, bison, and white-tailed deer. Visitors remain in their own vehicles and drive a 3-mile loop through enclosed naturalistic enclosures where animals roam freely at road level. Black bears frequently approach vehicles directly; the proximity of a 300–500 pound bear at car window height is the park's signature experience and distinguishes it from zoo enclosures with glass barriers. The wolf pack territory crosses the drive route and wolves are commonly sighted from within the vehicle. Following the drive loop, a walk-through baby animal exhibit at the end displays bear cubs, wolf pups, and other young animals in an indoor nursery with glass-paneled viewing. The nursery baby animals rotate seasonally — late spring and early summer (May through July) provide the most diverse and youngest animal selection. The park operates seasonally from May through October with reduced hours in October and full closure from November through April. All species are North American natives with no exotic non-native animals. Photography from vehicle windows is encouraged throughout the drive, with bears routinely providing close-range opportunities without glass barriers separating visitor from animal. Children under 5 enter free, and the park is consistently rated among the top family-oriented paid attractions near Rapid City.
