Cosmos Mystery Area

Cosmos Mystery Area, located 8 miles south of Rapid City on US-16 in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is a classic American roadside attraction that has operated since 1952. The attraction centers on a small wood-framed building constructed on a sharply sloped hillside where — due to the visual dominance of the surrounding tilted structure — visitors experience the classic mystery spot effects: balls appear to roll uphill, water seems to defy gravity, people lean at extreme angles without falling, and figures of different heights appear to switch size when standing at different marked positions inside the building.
