Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, carved into the granite face of a mountain in the Black Hills of South Dakota, features the 60-foot faces of four American presidents — George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln — sculpted by Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln between 1927 and 1941. Visitors approach the monument via the Avenue of Flags, lined with the banners of all U.S. states and territories, which frames the carvings at the far end of the promenade. The Grand View Terrace serves as the primary viewing platform, positioned roughly half a mile from the sculpture, while the Presidential Trail (a 0.6-mile loop) descends closer and provides angled views from below the carving. The Lincoln Borglum Museum details the construction history with drill bits, tools, scale models, and archival video footage of workers suspended on the mountain face. The sculptor's studio, a short walk from the main complex, contains a 1:12 scale model Borglum used to plan the carving sequence. An evening lighting ceremony from late May through September illuminates all four faces after dark with a ranger program and flag ceremony. Parking is managed via a flat $10 per-vehicle fee at the National Memorial parking structure; no timed-entry passes are required for general admission. Peak crowds arrive between 10am and 3pm in July and August — arriving at opening (5am) yields near-empty viewing terraces and the soft southerly morning light that strikes the granite faces most directly. The memorial is located 25 miles southwest of Rapid City and sits at roughly 5,725 feet elevation, making mornings noticeably cool even in summer.
