Las Vegas is a desert city of about 679,000 people in Clark County, southern Nevada, and the centre of a 2.4-million metro area. It is known for the casino resorts of the Las Vegas Strip, the vintage neon of Downtown and Fremont Street, big-name shows and restaurants, and easy day trips to Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam and Valley of Fire.
Accommodation overview
Las Vegas has roughly 150,000 hotel rooms, among the most of any US city, and most of them sit on the 4-mile Las Vegas Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard South, technically in unincorporated Paradise). Mega-resorts from MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, Wynn and The Venetian combine casino, pools, shows and dozens of restaurants under one roof. Downtown around Fremont Street offers older, cheaper casino hotels; off-Strip areas hold locals casinos, non-gaming chain hotels near the Convention Center, and quieter resorts in Summerlin near Red Rock Canyon. Nightly rates swing enormously: the same room can cost $60 on a midweek night and $500 during a big convention, fight or holiday weekend. Almost every casino resort adds a mandatory daily resort fee (roughly $25-$57) and most charge for parking. Closed and gone: The Mirage (closed July 2024, being rebuilt as Hard Rock) and Tropicana (closed April 2024, demolished). Recent renames: Delano became W Las Vegas (December 2024), NoMad became The Reserve at Park MGM (December 2025) and The Cromwell became The Vanderpump Hotel (May 2026).

Check rates on Booking.comBooking tips
Get the best deals and avoid common mistakes.
Compare the all-in price: the US FTC fee rule in force since May 2025 requires mandatory resort fees to be included in the advertised total, but always check the final checkout screen; resort fees of $40-$57 per night are normal on the Strip.
Check the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority calendar (lvcva.com) before booking; large trade shows such as CES in January can triple room rates citywide.
Sunday to Thursday stays are usually far cheaper than Friday and Saturday; many resorts also impose two-night minimums on weekends.
Loyalty programmes matter: MGM Rewards, Caesars Rewards (book in the Caesars Rewards app) and Wynn Rewards often show members-only rates, and Marriott Bonvoy points can be used at MGM properties.
Budget for parking: most MGM and Caesars Strip resorts charge daily self-parking fees, while downtown and locals casinos are often cheaper or free.
Non-gaming, smoke-free options include Vdara, Waldorf Astoria, Four Seasons, Signature at MGM Grand and the Convention Center chain hotels; Park MGM is the Strip's fully smoke-free casino resort.
