Top 10 Beaches

The best beaches England has to offer.

1

Fistral Beach

England's most famous surf beach and the home of English surfing culture. Fistral faces the Atlantic and receives the most consistent surf in England. The Rip Curl Boardmasters (August) is England's premier surf competition. The beach is backed by the impressive Headland Hotel and surrounded by surf schools and board hire shops.

2

Porthcurno Beach

One of England's most beautiful beaches, Porthcurno has extraordinarily clear turquoise water and fine white shell-sand. The dramatic cliffs either side shelter the cove from wind. The Minack Theatre - an open-air theatre carved into the clifftop above the beach - is one of England's most extraordinary entertainment venues.

3

Brighton Beach

England's most famous urban beach, Brighton's shingle seafront stretches 8km with the Brighton Palace Pier as its centrepiece. The beach is backed by the distinctive seafront arches housing bars, restaurants, and surf hire. The water is often chilly but Brighton's beach culture is vibrant and cosmopolitan - beach volleyball, outdoor gym, and a lively bar scene.

4

Bamburgh Beach

Widely considered one of England's most beautiful beaches, Bamburgh's vast golden sands are dominated by the spectacular Bamburgh Castle on its volcanic crag. The Farne Islands, visible offshore, are home to puffin colonies (visit April-July). The beach is rarely crowded even in summer and the scenery is among England's finest.

5

Holkham Beach

One of England's most iconic beaches, Holkham is a vast expanse of white sand backed by pine forests and sand dunes, part of Holkham National Nature Reserve. The walk through the pines to reach the beach is part of the experience. Featured in the final scene of Shakespeare in Love, it retains a wild, unspoiled quality. Famous for its Norfolk sky and vast horizons.

6

Durdle Door

One of England's most photographed coastal features, Durdle Door is a spectacular natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast. The small beach below the arch is reached by a steep path from the car park. The turquoise water and dramatic cliffs make for extraordinary swimming conditions in summer.

7

St Ives Harbour Beach

The gorgeous harbour beach of St Ives, Cornwall's most beautiful seaside town. Protected from Atlantic swells, the harbour water is calmer than the open-ocean Porthmeor beach on the other side of the headland. The Tate St Ives gallery overlooks Porthmeor Beach. Exceptional light has attracted artists to St Ives since the 19th century.

8

Whitby Beach

Below Whitby's dramatic Gothic abbey ruins and 199 steps, Whitby's sandy beach stretches north towards Sandsend. The town is famous for Dracula (Bram Stoker wrote the novel here), Whitby jet jewellery, and some of England's finest fish and chips (the Magpie Cafe). A wonderfully atmospheric Victorian seaside town.

9

Chesil Beach

One of the world's most remarkable landforms, Chesil Beach is a 29km tombolo (barrier beach) connecting the Isle of Portland to the mainland. The pebble beach is not for swimming (dangerous undertow) but the Fleet Lagoon behind it is a nature reserve. The pebble size increases uniformly from west to east - local fishermen historically knew their location in fog by the pebble size.

10

Camber Sands

The best sandy beach within easy reach of London, Camber Sands has wide golden sands backed by impressive sand dunes. Popular with kitesurfers due to the reliable wind. Can get very busy on hot summer weekends (the nearest accessible beach for millions of Londoners).
