Arlington Row is a terrace of 14th-century former weavers' cottages, now owned by the National Trust and one of the most photographed views in England. The honey-coloured Cotswold stone, the River Coln in front, and the backdrop of water meadows create a quintessentially English scene.
Durdle Door
The iconic limestone arch of Durdle Door is one of England's most photographed coastal features. The beach below and the turquoise water make this exceptional in summer. The view from the clifftop path above (both east and west of the arch) provides different perspectives.
Bamburgh Castle
Bamburgh Castle on its dramatic basalt rock is one of the most photogenic castles in England. The combination of golden sand beach, crashing North Sea, and towering medieval fortress (with Lindisfarne visible on a clear day) makes this a world-class landscape photography location.
Rievaulx Abbey
These magnificent 12th-century Cistercian abbey ruins in a hidden valley in the North York Moors are among England's most atmospheric historical sites. The Gothic arches, the valley setting, and the play of light and shadow through the stone make this extraordinary for black and white photography.
Holkham Beach
The vast expanse of Holkham Beach with its pine forest backdrop, white sand, and enormous Norfolk sky provides one of England's finest big-sky landscape locations. The beach is rarely crowded and the light quality across the flat sands is exceptional. Featured in the final scene of Shakespeare in Love.
Lake District Reflections (Buttermere)
Buttermere is considered by many photographers to be the Lake District's most photogenic lake, surrounded by dramatic fells that reflect perfectly in the still water on calm mornings. Haystacks fell (Wainwright's favourite mountain, where his ashes were scattered) provides the eastern backdrop.
York Shambles
The Shambles is a remarkably preserved medieval street with timber-framed buildings overhanging so far that neighbours could shake hands from their windows. One of the best-preserved medieval streets in Europe and the inspiration for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter.
Sycamore Gap, Hadrian's Wall
A lone sycamore tree growing in a dip along Hadrian's Wall was the most photographed tree in England before it was illegally felled in September 2023. The location itself - the wave of the Whin Sill crags with the Roman Wall snaking over them - remains extraordinary and the tree's story adds poignancy.
Kew Gardens Palm House
The iconic Victorian Palm House at Kew is a masterpiece of cast iron and glass engineering. Inside, the tropical rainforest plants create extraordinary opportunities for botanical close-up photography. Outside, the perfect reflection in the pond (with Kew Palace visible behind) is one of London's great garden shots.
Portmeirion-style: Robin Hood's Bay
A remarkably picturesque fishing village clinging to a cliff above a rocky bay. The jumble of pink, cream, and white cottages cascading down the steep hillside, with the bay below and the North Sea stretching to the horizon, makes this one of England's most painterly and photographed villages.
