Çimenlik Castle and the adjacent Military Museum occupy a promontory on Çanakkale's waterfront, forming one of the most visually distinctive landmarks of the city center. The fortress was constructed in the 15th century by order of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II as part of a coordinated defensive system to control passage through the Dardanelles Strait, paired with the Kilitbahir Castle directly opposite on the European shore. Together the two fortresses could fire across the strait's narrowest point to block enemy shipping.
The castle's thick stone towers and curtain walls survive largely intact and can be explored on a self-guided walk through the fortifications. Several original Ottoman cannons — including a massive bronze piece bearing the tughra of a 17th-century sultan — remain on display within the castle grounds. The courtyard affords excellent views across the Dardanelles to the Kilitbahir Castle and the European shoreline, particularly good in the morning light.
The adjacent Military Museum is housed in buildings within the castle complex and focuses primarily on the Dardanelles Campaign of 1915. The collection includes Ottoman and Allied weapons, uniforms, maps, photographs, and personal effects recovered from the battlefields. The centrepiece of the outdoor area is a full-scale replica of the Nusret minelayer — the Ottoman vessel whose mine-laying operation in March 1915 played a decisive role in repelling the Allied naval attack on the Dardanelles. Visitors can board the Nusret replica and walk its deck.
A visit to the castle and museum combined takes approximately one to one and a half hours. The site sits at the heart of the Çanakkale waterfront, directly on the kordon (promenade), making it easy to combine with a seafront walk or a visit to the nearby Troy Wooden Horse. The castle is closed on Mondays.
