Konya City Day Trip

Konya, 103 km north of Karaman along the D715 highway, is one of the most historically significant cities in Turkey and forms an outstanding single-day excursion from Karaman Province. Intercity buses depart from Karaman otogar every 30 to 60 minutes and reach Konya in approximately 1.5 hours for around ₺150–200 ($4.05–5.40); Konya's city centre is then a short city bus or taxi ride from the otogar. The centrepiece of any visit is the Mevlâna Museum, housed in the mausoleum of Jalāl ad-Dīn Rūmī (Rumi), the 13th-century Sufi mystic and poet whose order of whirling dervishes was founded here — the museum's turquoise-tiled dome is one of the icons of Anatolian architecture. A morning spent at the Mevlâna complex and its gardens fills two to three hours, including galleries displaying Sufi manuscripts, instruments, and ceremonial garments. The Alaeddin Mosque on the city's central hill and the ornately carved portal of the Karatay Madrasa (now a ceramics museum) are within comfortable walking distance. Lunch is well-taken at one of the restaurants around the Mevlâna district — Konya is famed for fırın kebabı (slow oven-roasted lamb), etli ekmek (flatbread topped with minced meat), and bamya (okra stew). The afternoon can be spent at the Karatay Ceramics Museum or the İnce Minareli Madrasa (Slender Minaret Museum) before the return bus to Karaman. Buses back to Karaman run until late evening, giving considerable flexibility on departure time.
