Taşkale Cliff Granaries

Taşkale, a village 24 km south of Karaman in Karaman Province, is home to one of the most unusual vernacular heritage features in southern Turkey: a series of stone-walled granary rooms (zahire ambarları) built directly into the near-vertical face of a limestone cliff above the valley floor. The structures, some dating to the Ottoman period and earlier, were constructed to store grain safely above the reach of floods and vermin, accessible historically only by removable wooden ladders and narrow paths cut into the rock. The drive from Karaman takes around 30 minutes on a secondary road south; a private car or negotiated taxi (approximately ₺200–300/$5.40–8.10 return with waiting) is the practical means of reaching the village, as no regular dolmuş service runs. Arriving in the morning allows the cliff granaries to be seen in direct sunlight, as the rock face has an easterly aspect that catches light well before midday. The village below the cliffs is quiet and traditionally maintained; a small tea house near the base of the path serves çay and simple refreshments. The walk to the base of the granaries follows a short but steep path on rough stone — manageable for most visitors in reasonable health but not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. A stay of 1 to 1.5 hours is adequate to view the cliff structures, walk the village lane, and take refreshments before returning to Karaman. The proximity of Taşkale to Karaman makes it an easy half-morning excursion that combines well with visits to Karaman's city centre historic sites in the same day. No entrance fee is charged; the site is open and freely accessible.
