İvriz Rock Relief & Ereğli

The İvriz Rock Relief, situated near the village of İvriz some 10 km south of Ereğli in Konya Province, preserves one of the finest Neo-Hittite carved panels in existence — a roughly 2,700-year-old depiction of the storm god Tarhunza towering over the petitioning king Warpalawa, executed at near life-size on a natural rock face beside an ancient spring. Karaman lies 80 km to the southwest, and the journey via the D330 highway north-east to Ereğli takes approximately 1.25 hours by car; a bus from Karaman otogar reaches Ereğli in a similar time, after which a local taxi completes the final 10 km to İvriz village. The site is open-air and flanked by the same spring waters that feature in the ancient relief; visitors walk along a short paved path to the carved face, protected by a simple canopy. The surrounding village is quiet and agricultural, with the Taurus foothills rising to the south. A productive itinerary pairs the relief with a walk around central Ereğli, which contains a small but well-presented archaeological museum holding finds from the region. Lunch at a lokanta on Ereğli's main street adds to the visit before the return to Karaman, which can be completed comfortably by mid-afternoon. The relief is accessible during site hours; the best photographic light falls on the carving in the late morning when direct sun strikes the face of the rock. Ereğli offers fuel, ATMs, and several inexpensive restaurants, making it the logical base for refreshment and re-supply on this day trip.
