Rose Fields of Gülkent

The rose fields around Gülkent and the surrounding villages of Keçiborlu district, roughly 20 kilometres west of Isparta city, represent the heart of Turkey's Rosa damascena cultivation. Isparta Province produces the majority of Turkey's rose oil and rose water, and this quiet agricultural landscape — particularly the villages of Gülkent, Kuyucak, and Gündoğdu — transforms dramatically between late May and mid-June when hectares of pale pink roses bloom simultaneously. The harvest is carried out entirely by hand each morning between approximately 05:00 and 09:00, before the heat of the day causes the essential oils in the petals to evaporate. Families move along the rows gathering blossoms into cloth sacks, which are then transported by tractor to distilleries where the petals are processed within hours. Visitors who arrive at dawn can walk near the rows, observe the pickers at work, and inhale the extraordinary concentrated fragrance that fills the valley air. The spectacle is intensely photogenic: low morning light turns mist-shrouded rows golden and the contrast of vivid pink petals against the brown Taurus foothills is striking. Outside harvest mornings, the fields are still worth visiting for the landscape and to call at one of the small local distilleries, some of which offer tours and sell rose water, rose jam, and essential oils directly to visitors. Kuyucak village, about 15 kilometres from Isparta on the road toward Keçiborlu, is considered the most accessible village for day visitors and hosts a small rose festival during the harvest season. The rose cultivation area is accessible from roads and field edges, though visitors should avoid trampling the crop rows.
