A UNESCO cultural landscape of about 700 ha of orchards between the walls and the Tigris, best seen from the southern ramparts.
The Hevsel Gardens spread over roughly 700 hectares between the southern walls of Diyarbakır and the Tigris, and the best overview comes from the ramparts near Mardin Kapı and Keçi Burcu, a large bastion on a natural rock mass east of the gate, from where the gardens, the river and the Ten-Eyed Bridge are all visible. The gardens became part of the UNESCO landscape in 2015.
Photographers can combine two compositions: a wide view from the walls with layered green fields against the river and hills, and ground-level shots of orchards and tracks. Morning haze on the river in autumn and the green of spring give the strongest colour. Some of the viewpoints and garden paths may be fenced or altered by works, so access should be checked on site.
