A 19th-century Armenian church in Sur, reopened for worship in 2022; interior photography needs permission.
Surp Giragos (Saint Kyriakos) is the Armenian Apostolic church in Sur, built in the 16th century, rebuilt after a fire in 1881 and reopened in 1883. It was expropriated by the state in 2016, closed in 2015 and reopened for worship on 7 May 2022. The church stands at Göçmen Sokak in the Savaş neighbourhood.
Exterior photographers can use the narrow lanes for detail shots of the stone walls and tower, while interior photography depends on the caretaker's permission and service times. Visitors should dress modestly, keep silent during services and ask before photographing. The light inside is dim, so a fast prime and a steady hand are more useful than flash, which is often not welcome.
