Söğüt Ertuğrul Gazi Museum

Söğüt Ertuğrul Gazi Museum is a regional history museum in Söğüt town, Bilecik province, dedicated to the origins of the Ottoman Empire and the life of Ertuğrul Gazi, father of Ottoman founder Osman I. Söğüt, approximately 32 km east of Bilecik city, was the earliest seat of the Kayı clan and the birthplace of the Ottoman state in the late 13th century. The museum serves as the town's principal cultural institution and contextualizes Söğüt's extraordinary place in Turkish and world history.

The permanent collection is arranged chronologically, beginning with the nomadic Kayı clan's migration across Anatolia and progressing through the founding era of the Ottoman principality. Displays include replica tribal artefacts, period weapons, maps tracing the clan's westward movement, and scale models of early Ottoman encampments and fortifications. Decorative arts of the early Ottoman period, including textiles, ceramics, and metalwork, are represented in the later galleries. Interpretive panels in Turkish and English accompany the main exhibits.

A dedicated gallery focuses on the annual Ertuğrul Gazi Commemoration Festival, which takes place in Söğüt each September and draws tens of thousands of visitors. This gallery displays historic photographs of the festival, ceremonial costumes worn during horseback processions, and archival documentation of the event's evolution since the mid-20th century.

The museum occupies a purpose-built modern building in central Söğüt within easy walking distance of Ertuğrul Gazi Tomb and Orhan Gazi Mosque. A visit typically takes one hour. The museum is free to enter and open Tuesday through Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00; Monday closures apply year-round. The town center offers basic teahouses and small restaurants for refreshments before or after the museum visit.
