Bilecik Museum

Bilecik Museum (Bilecik Müzesi) is the main archaeological and ethnographic museum serving Bilecik province, located in the Şehit Orhan neighborhood of Bilecik city center. The museum presents the material culture of the province across several millennia, from prehistoric settlement through Byzantine and Ottoman periods to the early Republican era. As a regional museum it provides the broadest contextual overview of Bilecik's layered history, complementing the more period-specific heritage sites at the city castle and at Söğüt.

The permanent collection is organized across several galleries. The archaeological section displays pottery, coins, terracotta figurines, and bronze objects recovered from excavations at sites across Bilecik province, including finds from the Byzantine and early Ottoman periods. A dedicated ethnographic gallery presents traditional crafts of the region: hand-loomed textiles, embroidered garments, wooden domestic implements, and examples of the pottery traditions associated with villages such as Kınık in Söğüt district. The Ottoman-era section includes calligraphic documents, administrative records, and period household items.

A visit typically takes one to one and a half hours. The museum is well-lit and displays are clearly labeled, mostly in Turkish with some English summaries at section headings. The building is a modern permanent structure with climate-controlled galleries, making it a comfortable stop in both summer heat and winter cold. The museum is free to enter and open Tuesday through Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00; it is closed on Mondays.

The museum's location, a 10-minute walk from Bilecik Castle, makes it a natural complement to a broader heritage circuit through the city. Visiting the museum before the castle helps contextualize the archaeological layers visible in the fortress walls.
