Sim-Sim Waterfall (Köprülü Waterfall)

Sim-Sim Waterfall (also known as Köprülü Şelalesi after the nearby Köprülü village) is located in the Eleşkirt district of Ağrı Province, roughly 60 kilometres west of Ağrı city on the plateau above the Eleşkirt basin. The waterfall is fed by spring and snowmelt water cascading down a series of stepped limestone and basalt ledges, producing a multi-tier cascade that in high season (May to July) generates considerable noise and mist visible from the road approach. The falls are set within a narrow gorge cut into the volcanic plateau, where the contrast between the exposed basalt rim above and the lush, spray-fed vegetation below is visually striking. Willows, reeds, and wildflowers colonise the banks of the stream below the falls, making the site unusually green by the standards of the dry eastern Anatolian steppe that characterises most of the Eleşkirt area. The local name Sim-Sim (sesame) reflects traditional associations with the fertile character of the spring-fed valley. The site is known locally for picnicking and family outings, particularly on summer weekends when residents from Eleşkirt and Ağrı city drive out to use the natural area as an informal recreation spot. There are no formal visitor facilities — no ticket office, no car park, and no café — so visitors should bring food and water. The waterfall's flow diminishes significantly by August and is nearly dry by autumn; a visit in late summer will be disappointing compared to the May–June peak. Access from Ağrı city involves a dolmuş to Eleşkirt followed by a local taxi to the waterfall site. Combining Sim-Sim Waterfall with the adjacent Eleşkirt Steppe on the same day makes for a satisfying half-day excursion from Ağrı city.
