Posof Canyon (Posof Kanyonu) Trail

Posof Canyon (Posof Kanyonu) cuts through the rugged terrain of Posof district, approximately 80 kilometres north of Ardahan city toward the Georgian border. The canyon was carved by a tributary of the Kura River system and features steep limestone and basalt walls, dense riparian vegetation, and a dramatically narrow gorge section at its deepest point. The 12-kilometre out-and-back trail begins from Posof village, reached by bus from Ardahan in approximately 1.5 hours at around 80 TRY. A 3-kilometre walk along a rough vehicle track from the Posof bus stop leads to the canyon trailhead. No permit is required.

The trail descends gradually into the canyon over the first two kilometres before entering the gorge proper, where the walls narrow and the path traces the stream bank on a rocky, uneven surface. Elevation gain on the inward leg is approximately 400 metres, concentrated in the latter half as the trail climbs back out of the gorge toward the upper viewpoint. Underfoot conditions vary: the approach track is compacted gravel, the canyon path is loose rock and soil with some scrambling sections near the gorge walls.

Shade is plentiful inside the gorge but absent on the exposed upper sections. The canyon stream provides a reliable water source through summer, though purification is advisable before drinking. No refuge huts or formal shelters exist along the route.

Key landmarks include the gorge entry narrows at kilometre 2.5, a natural rock arch visible from the main trail at kilometre 5, and the upper viewpoint looking back down the canyon at approximately kilometre 6. The recommended turnaround point is the upper viewpoint; continuing beyond requires scrambling on unmarked terrain. The trail has no formal waymarking; the stream and canyon walls serve as navigation guides through the lower section.
