Hanak District Waterfall Trek

The Hanak District Waterfall Trek follows a stream valley in Hanak district, 55 kilometres north of Ardahan city, to a series of waterfalls in a forested ravine. The 8-kilometre return trail requires a private vehicle from Ardahan (approximately 1.5 hours drive); no dolmuş serves the trailhead. The falls are fed by snowmelt streams descending from the highland plateaus north of Hanak, and peak flow occurs in May and June when snowmelt is at its strongest.

The trailhead sits at the edge of the Hanak valley floor. The first two kilometres of the trail follow a rough vehicle track along the stream before narrowing to a footpath as the valley steepens. Elevation gain is approximately 250 metres over the full 4-kilometre inward leg, concentrated in the final kilometre approaching the main waterfall. Underfoot conditions are mixed: compacted gravel near the start, transitioning to damp earth and loose rock in the forested upper section. The trail is partially shaded by oak and pine woodland, with full exposure on the open approach section.

The main waterfall drops approximately 20 metres into a rocky pool; a smaller secondary fall is visible 200 metres further upstream. The pool at the base is a traditional local picnic and cooling spot on summer weekends. The recommended turnaround point is the secondary fall above the main pool. No formal waymarking exists on the trail; the stream serves as the primary navigation guide through the valley.

The stream water near the falls should be treated before drinking; carry sufficient supplies from Hanak town. No refuge huts or shelters are present on the route, but the relatively short distance and partial shade make this a manageable summer hike.
