Çıldır Lake Partial Circuit Walk

Çıldır Lake sits at 1,959 metres above sea level on the high Anatolian plateau, approximately 45 kilometres northeast of Ardahan city. The lake is among the largest highland lakes in Turkey and freezes completely in winter, becoming famous for horse-drawn sleigh rides across the ice. The partial circuit walk covers 8 to 12 kilometres of the lake's southern and eastern shoreline, as the full perimeter of roughly 40 kilometres is too long for a single day on foot without logistical support.

The trailhead is reached via dolmuş from Ardahan in approximately 40 minutes, costing 40–60 TRY. Walkers begin from the lakeside guesthouses near Çıldır village and follow a combination of unpaved vehicle track and open shoreline path. The terrain is almost entirely flat — elevation changes are negligible — making this one of the gentler day walks in Ardahan province despite its moderate distance.

The shoreline landscape alternates between open grassland, reed-fringed shallows, and volcanic rock outcrops. On clear mornings, the lake surface reflects the sky and surrounding hills with mirror clarity. Birdlife is particularly rich: flamingos, pelicans, and a variety of waterfowl use the lake as a staging ground during migration. The 13th-century Akçakale castle ruins rise above the northern shore and are visible from the walking path on clear days.

No formal waymarking exists along most of the route; walkers navigate by keeping the lake to one side. The main recommended turnaround point for the partial circuit is the eastern bay at roughly 5–6 km, offering the best views back across the water to the volcanic hills. Water is available from guesthouses at the start and finish. No shelters exist along the trail; the flat terrain and proximity to the village make extended exposure unlikely on the partial circuit.

Tips for visiting

  • Carry a wind jacket even in summer; Çıldır Lake is exposed and afternoon breezes can be strong
  • Morning hours offer the calmest winds and best reflections on the lake surface
  • Bring binoculars for birdwatching — the lake hosts flamingos and pelicans during migration
  • Wear sun protection; the high-altitude plateau offers little shade along the shoreline
  • Guesthouses near Çıldır village serve basic meals — plan lunch at the start or end of the walk
  • Download an offline map before setting out as there are no trail markers along most of the route

When to visit

June through September is the primary walking season; the lake is fully frozen and under snow from November to April. Early morning walks in July and August offer the calmest conditions and best wildlife sightings before afternoon winds develop.

Accessibility

The Çıldır Lake circuit walk is not wheelchair or stroller accessible in its natural state. The path follows unpaved vehicle tracks and open shoreline over uneven ground. Short sections of flat compacted track near the village could be manageable for some mobility aid users, but the majority of the route is unsuitable.
