Bayezid Restaurant

Bayezid Restaurant draws its name and much of its clientele from the Sultan Bayezid II Külliyesi — the 15th-century mosque, hospital, and madrasa complex that anchors the eastern end of Amasya's old town and remains one of the city's most visited Ottoman monuments. The restaurant occupies a modest space on a side street close to the complex, making it a natural stop for visitors touring the site. The kitchen specialises in the stewed and slow-cooked dishes that define Amasya's domestic culinary identity: etli bamya, a meat-and-okra stew thickened with tomato and kept alive on the stove throughout service, is the signature plate and rarely leaves the menu regardless of season. Çiçek bamyası — the floral-cut okra variety unique to the province — appears in late summer. Mercimek çorbası (red lentil soup seasoned with mint butter and paprika) opens most meals. Grilled lamb rounds out the menu on busier evenings. The dining room is functional and unpretentious: tiled walls, plain wood tables, and minimal decoration direct attention to the food rather than the surroundings. A small street-side terrace catches afternoon shade and is preferred in summer. Prices are among the most accessible in Amasya at ₺200–500 per head for a full meal. No reservations are taken or required; the restaurant operates on a first-come, first-served basis throughout its hours. An ayran or freshly brewed çay rounds off the meal in time-honoured tradition.
