Afyonkarahisar Archaeology Museum

The Afyonkarahisar Archaeology Museum at Kurtuluş Caddesi No. 92 in Afyonkarahisar is the region's principal museum of ancient and historical culture, holding the most comprehensive collection of artefacts from the Afyonkarahisar province and the wider Phrygian highland zone of western Turkey. The permanent galleries cover the prehistoric, Phrygian, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods in sequence, allowing visitors to trace the successive cultures that occupied this strategically important Anatolian crossroads. The Phrygian collection is among the finest in Turkey, featuring carved architectural relief panels, terracotta figurines, votive objects, painted pottery and bronze fibulae recovered from excavations at sites across the province. The Roman galleries contain marble statuary, portrait busts, mythological sarcophagi and a notable display of pavonazzetto marble — the variegated purple-white stone quarried at the ancient site of Docimeum near İhsaniye, which was one of the most important imperial marble sources in the Roman world and supplied the Pantheon, the Baths of Caracalla and numerous other public monuments. Byzantine material includes liturgical objects, inscriptions, architectural fragments and metalwork. An ethnographic wing displays Ottoman-period household goods, textiles, weaponry and agricultural tools from the Afyonkarahisar region. The museum is managed by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. A modest admission fee applies for adult visitors; children under 18 enter free. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday; it is closed on Mondays.
