Bedesten (Historic Covered Market)

The Bedesten of Afyonkarahisar is the historic covered market at the heart of the city's old commercial quarter, situated on the slopes below the volcanic castle rock in an area that has served as the city's trading centre since Ottoman times. In the Ottoman commercial system, a bedesten was a secure stone market building used for trade in valuable goods — textiles, jewellery and precious metals — positioned at the core of the bazaar from which surrounding hans (inns), çarşılar (open markets) and artisan workshops radiated. The Afyonkarahisar Bedesten dates to the Ottoman period and sits within one of inland Anatolia's most intact historic commercial townscapes, surrounded by timber-framed konaklar (Ottoman mansions), narrow cobbled lanes and the remnants of the historic market guild system. The surrounding old town preserves a dense concentration of late-Ottoman architecture including residential mansions, religious foundations and commercial structures that together constitute a heritage zone of national significance. The Bedesten continues to function as a centre for local commerce, and the surrounding streets remain active with small shops, artisan workshops and traders selling Afyonkarahisar's signature products: kaymak (thick clotted cream served with honey), lokum (Turkish delight), sucuk (spiced sausage) and objects made from the city's distinctive white marble. The area around the Bedesten is the most atmospheric part of the city for walking, particularly in the early morning before traffic increases and in the cool of late afternoon when local residents shop in the covered lanes.
