Döğer Caravanserai

The Döğer Caravanserai in the small town of Döğer in the İhsaniye district of Afyonkarahisar is an Ottoman stone caravanserai dated to 1434, built to shelter merchants, their animals and their goods on the caravan route crossing the high Phrygian plateau. Caravanserais were the roadside inns of the Ottoman commercial network, typically spaced a day's caravan march apart, and the Döğer example served the important route linking Kütahya and central Anatolia with the markets of the western provinces. The building consists of a stone-vaulted main hall with thick outer walls and a gateway; the structural fabric is largely intact even though the building is no longer in active use. The masonry is characteristic of early Ottoman provincial construction, with well-cut ashlar blocks and arched openings. The interior space, once divided between a human sleeping area and animal stalls, retains its original proportions. The caravanserai is most easily visited as part of a Phrygian Valley day circuit that also includes the Aslankaya monument and Emre Lake a few kilometres to the south. The exterior is viewable at any time; interior access may vary depending on current local arrangements. A visit takes around 30 minutes. Entry is free.
