Selva de Irati Forest Loop

The Selva de Irati Forest Loop explores the southern fringe of one of the largest contiguous beech-fir forests in Europe, located in the Pyrenean foothills of northern Navarre. The 12-kilometre circuit begins and ends at the parking area near the Embalse de Irabia (Irabia Reservoir), approximately 105 kilometres from Pamplona via the A-21 motorway and the NA-140 mountain road through Ochagavía. No public transport serves this remote trailhead; private vehicle access is essential. An Irati visitor centre operates seasonally near the reservoir, providing free trail maps. No entrance fee or permit is required. The trail gains 390 metres from roughly 950 metres at the reservoir to 1,340 metres at the circuit's highest point. Surface underfoot is predominantly packed forest soil and root-laced earth with occasional short rocky sections. The canopy is dense throughout, providing substantial shade even in midsummer; combined with the elevation, temperatures remain noticeably cooler than in the Pamplona valley. The recommended direction is counter-clockwise: the first 4 kilometres follow the southern reservoir shoreline on a wide gravel track with views across still water to beech-clad slopes opposite. Beyond the dam, the path narrows and climbs through old-growth forest interior where moss-covered boulders and centuries-old trunks create a cathedral atmosphere. The upper plateau section near kilometre 8 opens briefly to meadow clearings before the route re-enters deep forest for the descent. Wildlife encountered includes red deer, roe deer, wild boar, red squirrel, black woodpecker, and short-toed eagle. The forest is exceptionally photogenic in October when beech foliage turns copper and amber. No formal refuge huts exist on the circuit; the Irabia parking area with its picnic facilities provides a logical base. In deteriorating weather, the reservoir road offers a straightforward bail-out descent to the valley. A small seasonal restaurant may operate near the reservoir in high season; water should be carried from Pamplona as stream quality is variable.
