Valle del Roncal Ridge Walk

The Valle del Roncal Ridge Walk is a 12-kilometre circuit ascending from Roncal village at 690 metres to an elongated ridge crest reaching 1,400 metres, high above one of Navarre's most traditionally pastoral valleys. Roncal lies approximately 105 kilometres from Pamplona via the A-21 motorway east and the NA-137 valley road south, accessible effectively only by private car as public transport to the upper Roncal Valley is extremely limited. The route begins in Roncal village, birthplace of the celebrated 19th-century opera tenor Julián Gayarre, and climbs steadily through pastoral terrain — initially crossing meadows used for the traditional summer grazing (trashumancia) of sheep that produce the valley's aged PDO-designated Roncal cheese. The trail rises through oak and beech forest before emerging onto the open ridge crest, where views extend across the Pyrenean frontier range into France and east toward the Aragonese peaks. The 710-metre elevation gain over approximately 5 kilometres of ascent is sustained, though the path is well-maintained and clearly waymarked on printed maps available from the Roncal tourist office. Surface underfoot transitions from a tarmac lane for the first kilometre, to packed earth forest track, to open limestone ridge with grass and occasional scree on the crest. Trekking poles significantly aid the descent, which follows a different path on the circuit's eastern leg. No formal mountain refuges exist on the ridge route, though Roncal village has a small hotel and rural house rentals, a restaurant, and several bars. A seasonal fountain in the forest section provides water; carrying at least 1.5 litres from the village is advisable as the fountain can be dry in late summer. The ridge is exposed to westerly winds and cloud arriving rapidly from the Atlantic; weather conditions change quickly above 1,200 metres. Key landmarks include the Casas de Iriarte hamlet at approximately 900 metres, views across the valley to the village of Burgui to the south, and the distinctive Romanesque tower of Roncal church visible from above on the descent.
