Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada occupies a former 12th-century pilgrims' hospice in the medieval walled town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, 48 km west of Logroño on the Camino Francés route to Santiago de Compostela. The building was originally founded by the town's patron saint to shelter pilgrims crossing the Rioja meseta, and several of its Romanesque arched corridors and the original stone well in the inner courtyard survive intact. The parador stands directly opposite the town's Gothic cathedral, which famously houses live chickens in a cage behind the altar in memory of a medieval miracle involving a wrongly hanged pilgrim — one of the Camino's most distinctive folk stories. Classic rooms feature Castilian period furniture, stone walls, and heavy textile curtains that evoke the building's medieval character; Superior rooms add floor space and enhanced views of either the cathedral square or the inner courtyard; Parador Suites are the largest rooms in the building and include sitting areas with exposed ceiling beams. The on-site restaurant is a genuine draw: the kitchen sources ingredients from across La Rioja and prepares regional dishes such as patatas a la riojana, chuletillas al sarmiento (lamb chops grilled over vine shoots), and seasonal white asparagus from the Ebro valley. A courtyard garden provides alfresco seating in warmer months, and a bar with an edited Rioja wine list operates throughout the evening. The parador is particularly well-suited to couples exploring the Camino circuit, cultural travellers drawn by medieval heritage, and those using it as a base for daytrips to Haro, Nájera, and Burgos across the Castile border.
