Playa de la Angostura

Playa de la Angostura occupies a narrow bay at the base of Monte Hacho on the eastern coast of Ceuta, facing the open Mediterranean and set against the dramatic backdrop of the fortress hill that defines the eastern skyline of this Spanish autonomous city. The beach is a mix of rounded stones and sandy patches — predominantly small pebbles with sand between — and the water is exceptionally clear, carrying the outstanding transparency typical of the exposed Mediterranean side of the Ceuta peninsula where there is less sediment disturbance than on the Strait-facing coast. The cove measures roughly 200 metres in length and is moderately exposed to easterly winds and swell, which gives it a more dynamic character than the sheltered coves on the southern shore. The combination of rocky seabed, crystal-clear water, and moderate shelter makes it a prime snorkelling destination, with fish, sea urchins, and invertebrates visible along the rocky margins at both ends of the bay. No commercial facilities operate at the beach: there are no beach bars, sunbed hire, lifeguards, or toilets on-site. The secluded character means it rarely becomes crowded even in high summer and is popular among Ceuta residents who seek the spot out specifically. The approach by taxi from the city costs around €6–8, or a 30-minute walk along Calle Independencia heads east toward Monte Hacho and reaches the beach via a stone staircase from the road. The surrounding area forms part of the Monte Hacho protected zone, and vegetation and seabirds on the slopes above add to the wild atmosphere. Swimmers should exercise care at entry: the rocky seabed and entry points require water shoes, and the absence of a lifeguard means visitors must gauge conditions themselves. The panoramic views from the beach take in the Monte Hacho fortress above and the Moroccan coast across the water, making it a rewarding destination for photography as well as swimming.
