Federal Café

Federal Café is an Australian-inspired café on Carrer del Parlament in Barcelona's Sant Antoni neighbourhood that played a pivotal role in establishing the city's specialty coffee and brunch culture from its opening in the early 2010s. The café brought a distinctly antipodean sensibility to Barcelona — good espresso extracted with precision, flat whites, and cold brew alongside a kitchen producing avocado toast, eggs benedict, and granola bowls — before these had become Barcelona staples. Federal Café occupies two levels and a rooftop terrace: the ground floor is a bright, airy café with long communal tables and an open kitchen; the roof terrace, covered with plants and natural light, is one of the most pleasant outdoor spaces in Sant Antoni. The coffee programme draws on specialty-roasted beans changed regularly by season, and both espresso and filter methods are executed with genuine knowledge. The brunch menu is wide-ranging and reliably executed — eggs in every form, toasted breads with creative toppings, and a selection of pastries from the in-house kitchen. Weekend brunch at Federal Café is a Barcelona institution in miniature, and the queue that forms outside from mid-morning on Saturdays and Sundays reflects the café's standing in the city. Weekday mornings are considerably quieter and the recommended time for a more relaxed visit.
