Basque Country Weather & Climate Guide 2025

Plan your trip with detailed weather information and seasonal tips for Basque Country.

The Basque Country (Euskadi) is an autonomous community in northern Spain nestled between the Cantabrian mountains and the Bay of Biscay, celebrated worldwide for its extraordinary gastronomy, avant-garde architecture, and fiercely proud cultural identity. Home to Bilbao's transformative Guggenheim Museum and San Sebastián's legendary pintxos bars, the region blends industrial heritage with breathtaking coastal scenery and lush green valleys. With more Michelin stars per capita than almost anywhere on earth, the Basque Country offers travelers a uniquely sophisticated yet deeply authentic Spanish experience.

Best Time to Visit

Months to Avoid

November to February

November and December are the wettest months with up to 160–183mm of rainfall; January and February are cold and grey with very limited beach activity, though cider houses and cultural attractions remain open.

Climate Overview

The Basque Country has a temperate oceanic (Atlantic) climate, characterised by mild temperatures throughout the year, relatively high rainfall, and lush green landscapes. Coastal areas receive the most precipitation (over 1,200mm annually) while the interior Álava province has a drier, more continental climate. Summers are warm and pleasant (18–25°C) rather than scorching, making the region a refreshing alternative to southern Spain in peak summer.

Seasonal Breakdown

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

March–May

Spring is variable with mild temperatures and occasional showers. The Basque countryside turns spectacularly green and wildflowers bloom on the hills. Fewer tourists and more affordable accommodation make this an excellent time to visit.

Tips: Pack a light waterproof jacket; temperatures can swing between 10°C and 18°C in the same day

☀️ Summer

June–August

The best weather for beaches and outdoor activities, with warm days (22–26°C), long evenings, and the major festivals. July is the peak month for domestic Spanish tourism; August sees the major festivals including Aste Nagusia Bilbao. Accommodation must be booked months ahead.

Tips: Book accommodation and Michelin-starred restaurants well in advance; beaches get crowded on weekends

🍂 Fall

September–November

September is arguably the best month to visit — warm weather (18–22°C), far fewer tourists than August, the San Sebastián Film Festival, and the txakoli grape harvest. October brings beautiful golden foliage but increasing rain. November becomes wet and grey.

Tips: September is the sweet spot between summer crowds and autumn rain; book the Film Festival period (third week of September) well in advance

❄️ Winter

December–February

Cool and often rainy on the coast, with cold temperatures in the interior mountain areas. Cider house season begins in January, providing a warm, convivial winter activity. Christmas markets in Bilbao and San Sebastián are charming, and the Basque Country is much quieter and cheaper.

Tips: Pack warm, waterproof clothing; January cider season (txotx) is a uniquely Basque winter experience worth planning around
