Playa de Plentzia is the beach at the end of Metro Bilbao Line 1, set on the estuary of the Butron river at the head of the bay shared with Gorliz. Because it lies in an estuary, the amount of sand changes with the tide: at high tide the beach is narrow, and at low tide a wide flat opens. Reported length is a little over 300 m.

A town beach on the Plentzia estuary at the end of Metro Line 1, easy to reach without a car and backed by a walkable old town.

The beach is relatively calm compared with the open Atlantic beaches to the west, which suits swimmers and families, though it gets very busy on summer weekends. Plentzia old town, with its fishing-port streets and small bars, is a few minutes away on foot, so lunch and a swim fit into one half day. Butron Castle, a restored medieval castle near Gatika, can be reached on the GR-280 path from the area. The Bay of Biscay is cold; sea temperatures usually peak at around 19 to 21 C in August.
