Playa de Mundaka

Playa de Mundaka is not primarily a sunbathing beach — it is a surf pilgrimage destination, home to one of the world's most celebrated and technically perfect left-hand waves. The Mundaka wave is formed when Atlantic swells funnel into the mouth of the Urdaibai estuary in Bizkaia, producing a long, barrelling left-hander that can run for up to 400 metres in ideal conditions. This wave has featured at the highest levels of professional surfing for decades, drawing competitors and spectators from around the world and cementing Mundaka's place in the global surf canon. The village of Mundaka sits at the tip of a small peninsula at the estuary mouth, approximately 40 kilometres northeast of Bilbao. The beach itself is a relatively narrow strip of golden sand at the base of the village, but the wave breaks over a sandbar in the estuary channel some distance offshore. This means the best way to watch or access the wave is from the elevated harbour wall or by boat, rather than from the beach itself. The village retains a deeply authentic Basque fishing character: white-painted buildings climb the hillside above the harbour, traditional bars and pintxos spots line the main street, and fishing boats tie up directly below. Several restaurants serve excellent fresh fish and local seafood within a short walk of the harbour. Conditions for the Mundaka wave are tidal and swell-dependent. The break requires a northwest or north Atlantic swell of sufficient size — typically two metres or more — and performs best at mid-tide on incoming or outgoing water. When conditions align it is world-class; when they do not, the village beach is pleasant but modest. The surrounding Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve provides outstanding birdwatching on the estuary mudflats and reedbeds a short distance inland. EuskoTren connects Mundaka to Bilbao via Gernika, making it one of the more accessible remote surf spots in the Basque Country.
