Playa de La Concha

Playa de La Concha is consistently ranked among Europe's finest urban beaches, gracing the heart of San Sebastián in the Basque Country of northern Spain. The beach curves in a near-perfect crescent of approximately 1.35 kilometres, sheltered by the small island of Santa Clara that sits in the middle of the bay and acts as a natural breakwater. This protection keeps the waters calm and shallow, making the beach one of the few city-centre Atlantic shores where families and non-swimmers can enter the sea with confidence. Fine golden sand of medium grain lines the shore, widening considerably at low tide when the Cantabrian tidal range retreats to expose a broad flat expanse. At high tide the beach narrows significantly, and visitors planning extended stays benefit from checking local tide tables in advance. Water colour ranges from clear blue-green to a deeper Cantabrian blue on sunny days, with good clarity throughout most of the summer. Sea temperatures reach 20 to 22 degrees Celsius in July and August. Framing the scene are the wooded promontory of Monte Urgull to the east, topped by the walls of the old Castillo de la Mota and a large Christ statue, and Monte Igueldo to the west, served by a vintage funicular railway and a hilltop amusement park. Between these landmarks runs the Paseo de La Concha, one of Spain's most celebrated seafront promenades: a broad walkway of ornate iron railings, decorative lamp posts, the historic Casino building, and the Hotel Londres y de Inglaterra, all dating from the late nineteenth century when San Sebastián served as the summer residence of the Spanish royal family. Amenities are comprehensive. Sun loungers rent for approximately eight euros per day, umbrellas for five. Showers and changing rooms are available at multiple points along the beach. Lifeguards patrol from June through September. Kayaks and paddleboards can be rented near the water. Several beach cafés line the promenade. Parking is intensely competitive in summer; the Okendo and San Martín car parks are the nearest practical options. Multiple Dbus city bus routes stop close to the promenade, and the Parte Vieja with its celebrated pintxos bars lies a ten-minute walk east along the waterfront.
