A small rocky cove west of Sant Antoni bay, popular for sunset. Arrive early in summer.
Caló des Moro is a small rocky cove west of Sant Antoni de Portmany, on the Spanish island of Ibiza in the Balearic Islands. A narrow strip of sand sits between steep rocky sides, and the cove opens west toward the sea, so the sun sets directly over the water in summer. The frame combines the dark rocks on either side, the turquoise water of the cove and the glowing horizon, and a 16-35 mm wide-angle lens covers the cove and the sky. Because the beach is tiny, the best compositions are limited and positions are taken early. In the busy season the cove fills well before sunset, and visitors often gather on the rocks to watch the light fade, so arriving early is the only reliable way to hold a tripod position. The best season is May to October. Sunsets with a few clouds produce stronger colour than clear skies, and calm days allow reflective water. Water shoes are useful because the rocks around the cove are sharp and slippery, and care is needed near the edges. Access to the cove is by a short descent from the road, and the shore is exposed to swell in rough weather. There is no entry fee. Tripods can be used on the rocks but have to be placed so as not to block others, and a compact model is practical. Facilities at the cove are limited, so water and any supplies should be brought from Sant Antoni, which has restrooms and shops. Drone flights near Sant Antoni and its coast are subject to Spanish aviation rules, so authorisation should be checked first.
