Ibiza is a small island, and where to stay decides the kind of trip. Ibiza Town (Eivissa) is the hub: the walled Dalt Vila old town, the port with its restaurants and shops, and the Figueretas and Marina Botafoch seafront just south of the port, with a mix of hotels, hostals and apartments within walking distance of the old town. Talamanca, a bay about 2 km north of the harbour, has a calm beach, a small number of upscale hotels and is linked to the centre by a promenade and local bus. Playa d'en Bossa, about 3 to 4 km south of the town, is the island's longest sand beach and its main party and resort strip, with large hotels, apartments and beach clubs and the loudest nights. Sant Antoni de Portmany, on the west coast about 15 km from Ibiza Town, has a bay with a cluster of hostals and mid-range hotels around Carrer Ramon y Cajal and the Avinguda del Doctor Fleming, the West End bar zone, and is the starting point for sunset spots along the bay. Santa Eulalia del Rio and Es Canar, on the east coast, are calmer, family-oriented areas with a seafront promenade, marina and resorts. The north (Portinatx, Port de Sant Miquel, Sant Joan) and the interior villages such as Santa Gertrudis hold boutique agroturismos and secluded luxury retreats that suit travellers with a hire car. Ibiza airport (IBZ) is about 7 km southwest of Ibiza Town and close to Playa d'en Bossa. Many beach and resort hotels close from November to March, so winter visitors should confirm opening dates; Ibiza Town hotels more often stay open all year.
