Meson El Trillo

Mesón El Trillo is hidden in one of the Albaicín's narrowest and most medieval lanes — Callejón del Aljibe de Trillo — in Granada's hillside Moorish neighbourhood that overlooks the Alhambra. Finding it requires navigating the labyrinthine streets of the Albaicín quarter, and this relative difficulty of discovery is part of what makes the restaurant a genuinely rewarding find. The centrepiece is the garden terrace: a private outdoor space built around an old aljibe (Moorish water cistern), planted with jasmine, citrus, and flowering plants that create a setting of considerable beauty. The garden terrace faces the Alhambra across the valley, making it one of the most romantically situated restaurants in Andalusia. The cooking is traditional Granadan and Andalusian — olla de San Antón (a Granadan winter stew of broad beans, morcilla, and pork), slow-roasted local lamb, mojete granadino (a salad of tomato, cod, and orange unique to Granada), and seasonal preparations drawing on the Vega de Granada plain's agricultural richness. The food serves its setting well without attempting to compete with it; the experience is primarily about being in the Albaicín garden with a glass of local wine as the Alhambra catches the evening light. Reservations for the garden terrace are essential and should be made several days in advance; interior dining is available without reservations but lacks the defining quality of the terrace.
