The Caminito del Rey is a walkway fixed to the sheer walls of the El Chorro gorge near Ardales, about 55 km from Málaga, in Spain's Andalusia region. It was built between 1901 and 1905 to give workers access between two hydroelectric plants, and it takes its name from King Alfonso XIII, who crossed it in 1921 for the opening of the Conde de Guadalhorce dam. Over the decades the original concrete path decayed and became notorious as one of the most dangerous walks in the world, until it was rebuilt and reopened in 2015 with a new timber walkway and safety rails above the old path. Today the route is about 7.7 km in total, including approach paths at each end, and the walkway proper runs for around 3 km. Walkers cross suspended boardwalks 100 metres above the Guadalhorce river, pass through narrow limestone canyons, and see a high-level hanging bridge and views of the Gaitanes gorge. Helmets are provided and must be worn. The walk takes about three to four hours, plus transfers, and goes in one direction only, with a shuttle bus linking the end point to the start. The best vantage points are the central gorge section and the hanging bridge. Tickets are timed, released in batches and sell out quickly, particularly for weekends, spring and autumn. Crowds are lightest in the first slot of the day and midweek. General admission costs about €10, and guided tours about €18, and bookings are made at caminitodelrey.info. The path closes on some days in winter, and bad weather can also cause closures. Visitors should wear closed shoes, bring water and carry photo identification.
