Marbella and Puerto Banús

Marbella, on the Costa del Sol 60km west of Málaga in the province of Málaga, Andalusia, is reachable in approximately 45 minutes by the very frequent ALSA bus service from Málaga's main bus station (tickets €4-7, departures every 20-30 minutes). The combination of Marbella's genuinely historic old town, the spectacularly glamorous Puerto Banús marina 6km west, and over 27km of beaches makes it one of the most versatile and accessible day trips from Málaga. The Casco Antiguo (old town) of Marbella is often overlooked in favour of the resort seafront but is one of the most photogenic historic centres on the Costa del Sol. The centre of gravity is Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Tree Square), a 15th-century plaza planted with 30 orange trees and flanked by the former Town Hall (1568) and the Chapel of Santiago. The narrow whitewashed lanes radiating from the plaza — particularly Calle Ancha and Calle Nueva — are lined with independent boutiques, small galleries, flower-hung houses, and traditional bars serving tapas at local prices. The Moorish Alcázar walls, though largely demolished, define the northern boundary of the old town. Puerto Banús, 6km west of the old town, is accessible by local Urbano bus (route 2, approximately €1.50, 20-30 minutes) or taxi (€8-10). The marina's inner harbour accommodates superyachts alongside a promenade of designer boutiques and seafood restaurants. The beaches extending along the Golden Mile between Puerto Banús and central Marbella include private beach clubs with sunbeds (€15-30 per person) and more accessible free public stretches. Practical day arc: arrive at 10 AM via bus; spend 2 hours in the Casco Antiguo including Plaza de los Naranjos and a morning coffee in one of the square's traditional cafés; take the local bus to Puerto Banús (30 minutes) for late morning or lunchtime; eat at a marina fish restaurant (€20-35 per person) and spend the afternoon at the beach; return bus to Málaga from Marbella bus station.
