Roca Belo Monte

Roca Belo Monte is a restored colonial cocoa plantation in the forested interior of Príncipe Island, operating as a heritage accommodation within the boundaries of the Príncipe UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which was designated in 2012. The property lies several kilometres inland from Santo António along a track that passes through dense secondary forest and active cocoa groves, giving it genuine remoteness even by the standards of Príncipe's already isolated landscape. The coast road approach requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle or a confident driver in a standard car, and the journey from the island's airport takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour.

The main building is a Portuguese colonial-era roça — a plantation complex — with thick stone walls, terracotta-tiled roofs, period wooden shutters, and an internal courtyard that serves as the social centre of the property. The architecture has been restored rather than replaced, preserving the proportions and materials of the original construction while addressing structural and weathering deterioration. Rooms are distributed between the main house and in restored outbuildings around the courtyard and grounds, each decorated with period-appropriate furnishings and locally sourced textiles. The accommodation is atmospheric and historically immersive rather than minimalist-modern, and guests should expect character over standardised finishes.

Dining is communal and largely included in the rate. Meals are prepared from local ingredients — cacao and coffee grown on the plantation, breadfruit and banana from the surrounding forest margin, fish from the island's coast, and greens from the kitchen garden — and served family-style in the plantation dining room. The cocoa produced on the estate is used in chocolate preparations served at meals and available to take home. A swimming pool set within the plantation grounds provides the principal leisure facility.

Guided plantation tours explain the full cacao production cycle from tree to dried bean, including fermentation and sun-drying processes still conducted on-site. Birdwatching excursions into the biosphere reserve are a major draw: Príncipe holds a concentration of endemic species including the Príncipe thrush, the Príncipe sunbird, the grey-headed sunbird, and the São Tomé fiscal, most of which can be seen within walking distance of the property. Boat trips to marine reserves, remote beaches including Praia Sundy and Praia Banana, and snorkelling sites can be arranged through the estate.

Roca Belo Monte is oriented toward independent travellers and small groups who seek immersive historical and ecological experience over resort-format leisure. Service is attentive but informal, reflecting the plantation's domestic scale. The property is not suited to guests with mobility limitations due to uneven terrain, stone staircases, and the remote access track.
