After a multi-year renovation, the market reopened with its wrought-iron and stone structure preserved while adding modern ventilation and an upper-floor dining area, blending its role as a working neighbourhood market with a food-hall experience for visitors. Queijo da Serra and alheira sausage from the cheese and charcuterie stalls are among the most-bought items, and several counters offer prepared plates of grilled fish, petiscos, and regional specialities for a casual lunch. The atmosphere shifts through the day — brisk and functional in the morning as locals shop for groceries, busier and more visitor-heavy around lunch as the food counters fill. Because it operates as a market rather than a single restaurant, there is no reservation system; visitors simply walk between stalls, and the best selection of fresh produce and fish is available earliest in the day, well before the Saturday closing time.
