Confeitaria do Bolhão, founded in 1896 near Porto's Bolhão market, is the city's oldest pastry shop and remains a working bakery-café rather than a museum piece, still producing its own pastries daily behind the original counter. The Jesuíta, a triangular puff-pastry treat filled with almond or egg cream, is the house specialty alongside the more common pastel de nata found across Portugal, and the galão — Porto's milky filtered coffee — is the standard pairing for either. The interior preserves much of its late-19th-century character, with wood-panelled walls, an old-fashioned counter, and a small seating area that fills quickly with a mix of neighbourhood regulars picking up bread and visitors drawn by its historic reputation. Because it sits close to the recently renovated Mercado do Bolhão, it is a natural stop before or after browsing the market, and mornings are the best time to see the full range of fresh pastries before popular items sell out. It operates as a straightforward walk-in bakery-café with no reservation system, closing earlier on Saturdays and staying shut on Sundays.
