Majestic Café

Majestic Café opened in 1921 on Rua de Santa Catarina, Porto's main pedestrian shopping street, and remains the city's most celebrated Belle Époque café, with carved wood panelling, mirrors, marble tables, and leather seating largely unchanged since its early-20th-century heyday. The menu is secondary to the setting — coffee, pastries, and light meals such as club sandwiches — but the pastel de nata and galão coffee pairing is the classic order, and the café is often mentioned alongside Lisbon's A Brasileira as one of Portugal's grand historic cafés. It is frequently, if loosely, associated with J.K. Rowling's time in Porto, which has added to its draw for literary-minded visitors, though it was already a landmark decades before. The atmosphere is elegant but touristy, with a piano sometimes played live and a steady flow of visitors taking photos of the ornate interior; locals tend to visit outside peak hours to avoid the crowds. Because of its fame, seating fills quickly at midday, and reservations are worth making for a sit-down lunch, though a coffee at the counter or a quick pastry can usually be managed without waiting.
