Venda Velha

Venda Velha is a small, low-lit tavern in Funchal's Zona Velha (Old Town), one of the last places on Madeira where poncha is still muddled to order in the traditional fishermen's style rather than pre-mixed. The crowd is a mix of Funchal locals stopping in after work and visitors drawn by the cobbled Rua de Santa Maria's bar-hopping scene; dress is casual and there is no age restriction beyond Portugal's legal drinking age of 18, though the compact room tends to fill with a 30s-to-50s crowd early and skews younger after 10PM. There is no formal music programme — a low murmur of conversation and occasional Portuguese radio playing softly in the background is typical, making the tavern better suited to conversation than dancing. The drinks list centres almost entirely on poncha, hand-muddled with aguardente (sugarcane spirit), honey and citrus at the bar in front of the guest, available in lemon, orange, passion fruit and tangerine versions, alongside a short selection of Madeiran wine and beer; food is limited to simple snacks rather than full meals. The tavern opens at 5PM daily and runs to around 2AM, with the busiest stretch between 8PM and midnight on weekends when the surrounding Zona Velha streets fill with bar crawlers; weeknights are noticeably quieter and better for a seated conversation at the bar. There is no cover charge and no reservation system — seating is first-come, first-served at a handful of small tables and bar stools, and on busy weekend nights visitors should expect to stand or share table space.
