Blandy's Wine Lodge Tasting Bar

Blandy's Wine Lodge Tasting Bar is the tasting room of one of Madeira's oldest wine houses, set in a historic lodge on Avenida Arriaga in central Funchal. The atmosphere is closer to a guided tasting than a conventional bar — small groups and couples of all ages come through for structured flights rather than a drinking-out scene — and dress is casual, with the room usually calm and conversational rather than lively. There is no music programme; the setting relies on the historic barrels, casks and lodge architecture rather than a soundtrack. The drinks programme is entirely built around Madeira wine, with guided flights spanning the four classic styles — Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malvasia — from dry to sweet, poured by staff who explain the fortification and aging process; there are no cocktails or beer on offer. The tasting bar operates Monday through Saturday, 9:30AM to 6:30PM, and is closed on Sundays, making it strictly a daytime and early-evening stop rather than late-night nightlife; the last tastings are typically poured shortly before closing. There is no cover charge for browsing the lodge, but tastings are priced per flight, and no reservation is required for walk-in flights, though larger groups are advised to book ahead.
